Essential Information If You’re Considering Working With Me

I’ve recently retired & no longer work with clients.I suggest y mfriend Bryce Kaye, PhD for therapy.  You can feel and function better, and I want you to, so you can make your life more the way you’d like it to be. For the past 50 years I’ve been helping folks feel better and behave more skillfully, in order to have the comfort and harmony most people want.

You are unique as a person, and the specific circumstances of your life and your specific differences from everyone else are very important for personalizing your therapy. Over the many decades I’ve been in the health field, I’ve seen most of the difficulties that bring folks to seek help, so I’m usually able relatively quickly to notice personal variations of these basic human patterns, and to recommend what to do about them.  I’m meeting fully vaccinated clients in-person again, and telehealth has proved Much more useful and effective than I’d feared, even adding new members smoothly to weekly hybrid groups.

I can help adults with the many habits of emotional and physical pain we call: anxieties, depressions, low self-confidence/esteem, relationship/couple and emotional intimacy problems. I’m also usually helpful with adult issues like depression, anxiety, ADHD, personal fulfillment, and productivity – instead of chronic pain, social isolation, or troubled relationships, as well as facilitating neuroplasticity [changing brain “wiring”] in a wide variety of physical disease and emotional dysfunctions.

My special strength in therapy and hypnotherapy is developing strong, warm rapport through direct conversation and honest feedback. This usually leads to at least some relatively rapid relief, problem solving and personal change. I’m also good at helping clients find and strengthen their motivation to change, and to discover the deeper inner resources for practicing what’s necessary to manage psychological and mind-body challenges. Clients frequently feel much better and behave more skillfully without necessarily knowing quite why.

My approach is eclectic and integrative, using a wide variety of strategies and tactics, especially Interpersonal, informal Cognitive Behavioral (CBT) , and Gestalt parts/chair work, …  I usually rely on common sense and experiential learning, rather than primarily on psychological theory or insight. “Change will bring insight more often than insight brings change” – Milton Erickson, MD.  Practicing conscious breathing, i.e. Mindfulness Meditation/ self-hypnosis can usually increase the efficiency and effectiveness of your learning the new internal and external information and patterns you need, as well as discovering creative ways of using it.

I earned a Ph.D. in clinical psychology in 1971 at UNC-Chapel Hill, and continued as a Visiting Assistant Professor for about 5 years. My next 4 or so decades were spent helping develop a large group practice of psychology, psychiatry, social workers and researchers. I’ve pursued extensive advanced and residential study with leaders in many approaches to therapy and problem solving, including Milton Erickson, MD,  Bob [MD] and Mary [ACSW] Goulding, Michael Yapko, PhD,  and Drs John and Julie Gottman, both PhDs.

I can see you in person either in 1] Raleigh on Tuesdays and Thursdays: CenterPoint Psychotherapy Associates, 3729 Benson Dr., Raleigh, NC 27609,  or 2]  in Chapel Hill on Mondays: Franklin Square, 1829 East Franklin St.Suite 100 J, Chapel Hill NC 27514. My email address is bob@drbobdick.com . My home address and office directions are on the Home Page horizontal Menu under For New Clients/Offices. Please send all snail mail Only to my home address: 507 Burgess Rd, Apex, NC 27523.

Individual sessions are 45 minutes, and the 3 weekly therapy groups are 90 minutes: Mondays Chapel Hill 5:30-7PM; and in Raleigh: Tuesdays 4:30-6PM, and Thursdays 5-6:30PM.

I’ve been off all insurance panels for many years, and offer a sliding scale on a case by case basis to very highly motivated clients. My fee slides up for clients with more income/investments & tax deferred accounts/real estate/collections than most of us, and down for insurance dependent and uninsured clients with Very limited funds. I’ve lowered my fees about 30% from current market level to see enough new clients to keep my groups full – the first session is $125, and we negotiate a fee for subsequent individual sessions that will work for both of us, usually between $125. and $145:00. Research has shown that for most clinical issues, weekly Group Therapy is usually equally or more effective and efficient than individual therapy. I especially enjoy group therapy, and unfortunately most therapists have no training in or familiarity with group therapy, so they don’t think to refer clients to group treatment.  Group fee is also negotiable, usually around $65./$75. a week, paid monthly in advance by the end of the first session of the month.

Clients pay me after each individual session, and since I don’t take credit cards or send statements, you can do that only by Venmo, cash or check. I strongly prefer Venmo because it’s easy, secure [no”Friends” since that would compromise confidentiality], and gives me a monthly record of who paid what. My Venmo “handle” is @bobdick , and my Venmo name is Robert Dick .

I can also give you the documentation/receipt you need to file for Outside of Network insurance benefits or Health Savings accounts. If you think your policy might have Outside of Network benefits, you’ll want to clarify your resources before calling me. So phone your insurance company’s 800 #, being sure to take notes to document your call, and ask 4 questions:

1] Does my policy have Outside of Network Mental Health benefits? and if so 2] What’s the Deductible?  3]  How much of that have I already met this year? and 4]  What is the date my Deductible turns over to start again for the next fiscal year?

If you’d like to know more about me though the eyes of my wife, Peggy Payne, you can visit her blog and website.  If we decide to work together you’ll hear me mention her regularly. She’s a fine writer and writing consultant/coach/ teacher. Her novel Sister India has been translated into several languages, and The New York Times recognised it as a Notable Book of the Year. Her more recent novels Cobalt Blue and My Life on Earth and Elsewhere are available throughout the English-speaking world and can be ordered from your local independent bookstore and through Amazon. You can read reader reviews by hitting “Reviews” at Amazon. Please be aware Peggy’s 4 novels are literary fiction, which is always elegantly crafted and often about major life challenges.  Cobalt Blue is highly erotic, and definitely not for the faint of heart.  Revelation tells the story of a minister in Chapel Hill who hears the voice of God.

Once you’ve explored my website, you’ll find me much more quickly available by phone than by email. Please remember, I work only Mondays in Chapel Hill/ no snail mail, and on Tuesdays and Thursdays in Raleigh/no snail mail. You can reach me at (919) 215-4703. Unfortunately my incoming email bob@drbobdick and VoiceMail are often delayed a few hours to a few days, and email is not a secure form of communication.  I look forward to chatting with you and discovering how I can help.
