Encouraging Mistakes In Order to Facilitate Learning

A true story I shared with a colleague: When Milton Erickson sent each of his 7 kids off to first grade, he’d hide something behind his back, saying  ” Now, I want you to make LOTS OF MISTAKES in school, and if you don’t, i’ll use this on you”, waving, with a big smile and laughter, a 2″ by 4″ piecea’ wood.  It’s a powerful message, delivered in a trusting relationship with love and humor and deep seriousness – perhaps not an easy mix of feelings for everyone to project, but I’ve found it very effective and well received.    Warmly,  bd
