My Bio 9/5/13

Bob Dick, PhD, CGP, AC   A Clinical Psychologist; 5 Decades of Experience
A Therapist’s Therapist

My special strength as a therapist and hypnotherapist is developing warm rapport through direct conversation and open, honest feedback. This usually leads to relatively rapid relief, problem-solving and personal change. I use a wide variety of strategies and tactics, especially Interpersonal, Cognitive-Behavioral and Hypnotic. I work with adults in: Individual, Couple, Group, Hypnotic, Brief/Coaching, and Eye Movement Desensitization-Reprocessing psychotherapies.

I lead one or two  Friday ALL-DAY HYPNOSIS GROUPS a year: 1. Hypnosis & Self-Hypnosis,  2. Hypnotic Impasse Resolution, or  3. Hypnotically Enhanced Intimacy Skills — for Couples and Individuals, and

Three Weekly Cognitive-Behavioral/Interpersonal / Eclectic Psychotherapy Groups: Raleigh 1. Tuesdays 4:30-6:00 PM, and 2. Thursdays from 5:00-6:30 PM; and 3] Mondays in Chapel Hill 5:30-7PM, and

A monthly Training/Support Group for professionals in psychotherapy, medical & other healing arts: Intermediate/Advanced, Raleigh, First Fridays, 10:00-Noon

I’m  an old guy, so I’ve had time to become knowledgeable and especially helpful with:
Depressions, Bipolar Disorder, and Low Self-Esteem
Anxieties, Phobias, Panic, PTSD and Survivors of Child Abuse
Mind/Body health issues – ADHD, pain, preparation for childbirth/surgery, rehabilitation, chronic dysfunction or illness and accompanying demoralization (for example, stuttering, blood pressure, headaches, MS, cancers, diabetes, sleep apnea, allergies/asthma, chronic fatigue, Tourette’s and other complex health issues)

Men’s Issues and (Believe-it-or-not) Women’s Issues
Anger management, Stress; Self-Regulation – like smoking cessation, weight management, and nail-biting

Spiritual/Religious issues

Couples skills, communication / interpersonal issues around openness, honesty and directness
Enhancing and un-blocking artistic/creative expression and performance

I’ve been in practice and trained other therapists for over four decades. My PhD in Clinical Psychology came from the University of North Carolina in Chapel Hill in 1971, with internship at a Harvard Medical School teaching hospital & child guidance clinic. I’ve traveled far and wide to continue advanced study with Milton Erickson MD, and other leading therapists.
I was a senior partner at HRC Behavioral Health and Psychiatry, PA, and a supervisor and trainer of professionals in psychotherapy, hypnosis, and group psychotherapy. I visited China in 1982 to teach mental health practices, particularly group therapy and hypnosis. In addition to the usual professional organizations, I’ve been a member of the American Academy of Psychotherapists, the American Group Psychotherapy Association, and a Founding Member of the National Register of Certified Group Psychotherapists/CGP (all inactive). I was an Approved Consultant/ AC with the American Society of Clinical Hypnosis, have taught many local and regional ASCH workshops, and was a two-term past-president of the NC Society of Clinical Hypnosis.

I have two grown sons and live in the country with his wife, Peggy Payne, a writer who coaches, consults and teaches writers. She has been a Visiting Scholar at Duke University, and an Indo-American Fellow for 3 months in India. Her novel Sister India was a N.Y. Times Notable Book of the Year. Of her 4 novels:  Cobalt Blue is a complex, elegantly crafted exploration of an artist’s life shaken by an unexpected and intensely upsetting burst of spiritual and sexual kundalini energy, and My Life On Earth and Elsewhere is about a 15 year old girl with an astral boyfriend  www.peggypayne.com.

For fun, I drive an old car, study Tai Chi, apply Aikido to everyday life, enjoy dogs and read a lot. I was for 25 years a strong supporter of THE PEOPLE’S PHARMACY with Joe and Terry Graedon, 91.5 FM, Saturdays 7:00 AM.
